The 2nd science policy dialogue Think Tank Meeting took place online on December 5th 2023 and saw the participation of 19 experts including representatives from EU Directorates and partners from different EU funded projects focusing on Maritime Spatial Planning and Marine Protection.
The main objective of the Science Policy Dialogue Think Tanks is to co-develop key recommendations in collaboration with linked projects and achieve validation through the engagement with policy actors. The MSP4BIO project in fact aims at collaborating with sister projects to jointly communicate scientific outputs to policy makers in a simple form and to scrutinize them against policy coherence criteria.
The specific objectives of the 2nd Think Tank meeting were:
1) to consolidate the coordination process among current relevant MSP-related projects and initiatives,
2) to identify the main solutions to improve the coherence of MSP and biodiversity related EU policies and
3) to initiate the co-development process with policy actors and showcase the tools and the results produced by the projects, including synergies and complementarities.
During the meeting, the key tools and approaches produced by ongoing projects have been presented. The tools and approaches were then linked to specific priorities towards the improvement of the current implementation of the MSP Directive to include biodiversity protection and in general to improve the coherence of biodiversity and MSP policies.
In the next Think Tank Meetings which will be held in 2024 and 2025, the tools and approaches will have been finalized and specific recommendations will be produced with the objective to support the development of improved guidance to support future implementation cycles of the MSP Directive.
